Public transport

It's been ages since I have used public transport. You see I have my own vehicle so I never really needed to use it. But with rising gas prices, I think it might be a better option than taking my own car everywhere to save money. Stuck on the road

Sometime back I had this experience which made me realize the importance of modern conveniences in life. We all had gone out shopping at the local mall since it was a bright sunny weekend. By the time we returned to our cars, the weather had taken a turn for the worse. It seemed that all the rain clouds were ready to let loose at any moment. We hurriedly pushed the shopping cart to our old trusty car, dumped the shopping stuff into the trunk and piled into the car as quickly as we could. Just as we had gone a short distance, it started raining heavily. Driving slowly, we managed to cover quiet a distance before our car sputtered and died on us. No one wanted to venture out in the torrential rain as none of us had any raincoats with us. A couple of guys who were drenched due to the downpour were walking past, when we asked them if they could lend us a hand and push the car to the side till help arrived. We just could not sit here in the dead car and hope that it will start miraculously. We really needed to do something without getting muddy, and wet. It then dawned on us that we had something called a phone with us. It’s like – why didn’t we think of this earlier? We hunted down the number of the mechanic and told him our location. He came over mighty quick and diagnosed the problem as a weak battery and some moisture accumulation in some electrical circuits. Luckily he always carried a spare battery for these emergency calls. It took him approximately 15 minutes to get the car started with the spare battery. If it wasn’t for our cell phone, I think we would have had a much more difficult time reaching home.

I really like reading

What I really love doing on my spare time is reading. I like reading just about anything that catches my fancy at the moment. Currently I am hooked on books written by Stephen King. He is an exceptionally good writer, since he has an ability to bring words alive. You tend to get submerged in the story and it seems like you are actually part of the story itself. Once I start reading, it becomes simply difficult to put the books down. Some of the novels which I still like till this day are: Skeleton Crew, Different Seasons, Pet Cemetery, Salem’s Lot, Everything’s Eventual. The Dark Tower series are simply riveting. He has managed to keep the story thread line intact and alive thru so many volumes. It’s simply incredible. Just recently I picked up a novel by him called “Duma Key”. This novel is simply riveting. It’s a must read novel. He started thinking in this direction after his 1999 roadside accident that permanently altered his way of thinking about life. The most disturbing source of fear in his books comes from the gradual fading of health and sanity.
Even after all these years, he can still have the ability to scare the wits out of you. If you haven’t read it yet, I won’t reveal the story line to you. If you have then you’ll probably agree with me.

Our field trip

We had gone out on a trip many years ago; our much used and loved old car broke down in the middle of the road leaving us completely stranded. It was a national highway and in this particular afternoon, there wasn't much traffic. There wasn't much help coming even though I looked around everywhere. Just a few trucks and buses plying on this highway and we saw this is one small eatery located nearby where we rested for a bit. The food looked tempting and the owner was willing to make something really fresh for us on the spot. He had even taken the vegetable and the kneaded dough out, but by then we had managed to get the car going. We hopped in and headed back towards town and hunted down a mechanic to fix our car up. Sometime later, we were starving and bought some fruits and ate them as a quick snack. Next time we will be better prepared. Nevertheless it was a fun enjoyable trip. I really do not know about you, but for me the Internet really has changed the way I look for information. Whenever I am in need of information, I always use the search engines to hunt down the information, where as I used to go to the library before. The Internet has really changed my entertainment habits. At one time, I used to watch TV and listen to Radio for many hours a week, but I hardly ever watch TV programs or listen to Radio anymore.

A nuisance called phone

Yes, the phone really has become a nuisance for me. I can never get any peace and quiet in the house. It is always rings or buzzing. It's either the call center employees trying to push some product, the wrong number or some other totally irrelevant phone call. The caller id does help out a lot after I have identified the number and fed it into the phone. I also tell the caller not to call me again regarding these promotional items which he/she is pushing. But in some cases it does not help at all and I really do lose my cool. The only thing I really do is to give them a good yelling and tell them that I'll report them next time. Allowance and kids

After talking to a friend of mine who has a little kid about whether they should be given an allowance or not, I really got thinking about it. I think what we should do is assign them chores to do and at the end of the week they would be paid they have earned. Shopping at the supermarket is fun. We get to see so many varieties of products which under other situations we would never see. Friendships

No matter how good a friendship we have, I noticed that people tend to drift apart during the course of time and not much can be done about it. I remember even as a little kid that I was fascinated by magic shows. This fascination has stayed with me till now. Reading books vs watching movies

Reading books and watching movies are a few of my favorite activities. But what I really hate it when movies are remade from novels. In the movies, they don't change just a few minor parts, but go the whole hog at times. The end result is that often the story line gets changed. Personally I think it is safer to say that most of the times the book is much better than the movie. This is usually because there is more character development and scenes are more left to your own imagination. Books are more complete. It can be difficult to translate how you imagined a scene into a live action scene. Sometimes, there have been instances when I have actually enjoyed the movie more than the book, despite the changes and the missing scenes. Though the movies are great in their own way, I find books better than the movies. What I like about books is that I can create my own imagines in my head, and even certain pronunciations of certain words or names. I do like movies about books, but they are just never as good as the book.

Could not sleep last nite

I really cannot sleep tonight. I was tossing and turning. No matter how many times I tried counting sheeps, nothing helped. There are just too many things cluttering my mind today. So I got out of bed. No use struggling going off to sleep. Finally got some coffee made, pizza reheated, turned on the computer and started surfing the net to catch up on my e-mails. How do you sleep – with or without lights on?

I was talking to someone recently and a something which they said really got me thinking. They said that they simply cannot sleep with the lights on. So I am wondering….how do you sleep…with the lights on or off? I am not one of those people who can sleep with the lights on, unless of course I am totally exhausted. In this case I fall asleep as soon my head hits the pillow. But it seems that some people love sleeping with the lights on. They simply dislike total darkness. Sure I keep a light on in the main corridor or maybe the staircase just in case someone needs to go to the fridge to get something or go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. But I simply cannot have a light on in the room where I am sleeping, because even with my eyes closed I will still see a lot of light. If I am sleeping at someone else’s place, and they are sleeping with the light on….then I usually cover my eyes with some cloth so that the light doesn’t disturb my sleep.

One fine day…..

About a year ago when I had gotten up from a short nap on a Sunday afternoon, I noticed that it seemed that allot of cats were making one helluva noise just outside the house. At first I ignored it thinking that the bunch of cats will go away by themselves. But the sound was persist ant.

So I went outside and took a peek. It was not exactly what I had expected. There was a mother cat with 3 kittens sitting on the driveway. The kittens were really hungry it seemed. The mother cat saw me and just froze. So I backed up a bit and started thinking what should be done next. I really didn't want to drive them away at all considering that there were 3 very young kittens with the mother cat.
After taking stock of the situation, I went inside to hunt for some food for the cat family. Going thru all the food items in the fridge, it was decided that just a plain simple bowl of milk was the best option at the moment. I went off on a bowl hunting mission all through out the house....finally locating a medium sized one after 10 minutes. Looked outside and the mother cat and its litter was still outside. I quickly poured some milk in the bowl and placed it outside near the cat and kittens. All four looked at me and the bowl as if I was some alien from outer space. Noticing that they might run away and not drink the milk, I withdrew to a safe distance and hid behind the car to watch them.
So all four of them looked in my general direction and then at the bowl of milk and then back in my general direction and then back at the bowl of milk, not knowing what to do. Finally, the mother got curious and started investigating the bowl of milk. The kittens followed suit. Apparently they liked it so much that the milk simply disappeared in a matter of minutes. I refilled the bowl of milk so that they could have something whenever they got hungry. After hiding the kittens behind some leftover construction stuff, the mother cat went off somewhere....probably to hunt for food. She used to come by on a regular basis initially, but as the kittens grew older...the visits became less frequent.

Of the three kittens, we gave the first 2 kittens the following names: Softy and blackie. I really do not remember what the third kitten was called. I don't think we ever gave it a proper name. No name suited it. It just seemed so unfriendly and mean.
We really fell in love with Softie and Blackie. We really looked forward to seeing them each and every day. They were real inquisitive, friendly, adorable and it seemed like they really did like us. We fed them on a regular basis with whatever leftover food item we had. Whenever they got hungry between meals, they usually went on a hunting mission to see if they could catch something to eat like a mouse or a bird. As night time approached, they usually found a safe cozy corner in one of the trees or in between the leftover construction material. Early in the morning when I used to go out to get the paper, they used to see me from where ever they were hiding, run up to me and follow me around.

As time flew by, they got older, bigger, bolder, they started venturing more and more outside our property. Pretty soon they only used to show up in the morning and in the evening by our front door and go meow...meow and wait till we showed up with something to eat. They always managed to lighten up our dull day and put a simile on our face. But I guess it was bound to happen. One fine day, they were all gone,and it has been 5 months since then. I think it all started with the meanie cat as I sometimes called it. It was the first one to leave. But it never occurred to me that one day that the remaining two would seek their own place. I guess what they say is true...We don't adopt cats...it's the cats who adopt us. They will stay as long as they wish. Wherever they are, I hope they are happy and in good health.

Dirt free house

I hardly get the time to clean the house as it is, since I spend most of my time at the office. My old faithful vacuum cleaner was broken and lying in the garage. Looking back I have realised how much we have come technologically. I really do prefer the laptop over desktop as it is more convenient as it takes up less space and gives very similar if not the same performance. In comparison, desktops look so bulky and outdated. I can take the laptop almost any place since it is really portable. All I need is a net connection and a power supply point. Alot of places have WI-FI hotspots where I can have access to the net at nominal costs. Now I can go to the mall, just wander around for awhile...grab a bite to eat...and surf the net in some cozy corner. I like doing this especially during hot summers months, where I can enjoy the air conditioning at the mall without spending a fortune on electricity.

Rainy days

I really love rainy days especially if they fall on the weekends. I can sleep in late without feeling guilty about it. As the day progresses, I usually just bum around the house in my regular house clothes. Usually I can found surfing the net. When I get bored with it, I either flip thru some reading material, watch some t.v. or listen to music. Some when I feel like not doing any of the usual stuff, I sit on the porch either sipping coffee/tea or eating something something hot. I just love to sit outside and watch it rain and drizzle, which really refreshes me.

Time indeed has changed

Peoples attitudes have undergone a sea of change in the last decade. I distinctly remember that people used to be more friendlier towards each other, even towards strangers. When someone ran across someone or saw them across the store, they used to give some sort of greeting. Maybe a hello/hi or just a nod of head. Even strangers sometimes seemed to be courteous. But these days, no one has the time for simple greetings and everyone seems like total strangers. Times seems to have changed alot it seems. People have seemed to have lost all their grace and manners with the passage of time. Everyone seems to be in such a rush these days that they simply do not have the time for simple greetings. Everyone seems so withdrawn into their own shell. No one wants to make eye contact with the other person on the bus, taxi, etc.

Supermarket experiance

Finally it's that time of year when I have to go out of the house to purchase groceries. The pantries and fridge are both bare empty. But I had to fit in the food shopping between the dentist appointment and picking up a relative later on. So after a short drive, I ended up inside the supermarket. The first thing I noticed immediatly was how cool it was inside the store. Bought some veggies first. I noticed that I had just took too long and I was really running short of time. So I had to rush thru the shopping. I was actually running thru the store with the cart. Found some washing detergent, soap, necessary food supplies, which were quickly dumped into the cart. Almost forgot to pay in my mad rush to leave quickly. But luckly, at the end of the day I was able to accomplish the remaining two tasks without missing any deadlines. Next time, I probably won't compress so many items into such a narrow time band.

Exercise regimen

A proper well planned exercise regimen is necessary to maintain proper health. Choose an exercise which suits you. If you have never any exercise at all, then you should start off with simple stretching exercise and a little bit of walking. As your body loosens up and builds up stamina, then increase the duration of the exercise. Be flexible in setting goals for yourself. Plan out in advance your exercise schedule. Switch from eating unhealthy foods to healthier less oily foods. Eat lighter meals instead of heavier meals. This makes you less lethargic. Never do exercise after eating heavy meals. Initially you will tired, but soon your body will adapt to the exercise regimen which you have set out for your self. Soon you will notice that you are feeling more vibrant, more full of energy and more mentally alert. There are so many positive health benefits to exercise. So if you haven't done so already, switch now and reap the harvest of healthy living.

My favorite days

The weekends are the days which I really like I alot. It gives me time to unwind and relax. The slow lazy Sunday spring/summer afternoons are one of my favorites especially when the weather is just right. On these days, I like to pull up a chair on the porch and either read something, listen to radio or maybe just nod off. Commercial vehicles are not allowed on these inner roads so we do not get much traffic here. So it's pretty much quiet here and one can get away from the daily city grind without going off to some remote corner of the planet.

Are you the same person You were 1 year ago?

Recently I posted a comment on someones page in which I said "Remove me if you do not like me". I received a comment from one of my friends stating that 12 months ago, I would not have said something like that. It really got me to thinking that maybe my buddy was probably right and that I have developed a thick skin. I've learned to take alot of stuff which people dish out online, roll with the punches and not take it all so seriously. Sure it might hurt sometimes, but i have acquired a different mindset now than before. Whereas 12 months ago I might have been sensitive in my reaction to people's comments for the most part now it simply does not matter. I think I have come a long way since I first started. Sometimes some situations just toughen you up. Has this same happened to you? How much have you changed?

Handling stressful situations

Sometimes, life flows smoothly by. but at times it really hits the rough patch when nothing seems to work right. No matter how hard you try, nothing seems to work out the way you want it to. You end up getting frayed nerves, irritated, stressed out and in a foul mood. When a person get stuck in this vicious cycle of stress, very little seems to help.
But if you are able to use the following tips, maybe you can minimise the stress to minimum. Step away from the stress causing area. If you are in an office, just walk away to a different section for awhile. Take deep breathes. Try to think of something calming. Switch on the television or radio and try to divert your attention. Call up someone and talk to them for awhile. Do a bit of meditation. It has a calming effect.
There are so many remedies and not every method suits every person. Stressful situations last only as long as you want them to. if you are observant, you might be able to pick up the signals which might lead to the stress building situations and maybe if possible, take remedial action to minimise it. Sometimes, just by saying"OK/FINE/I'LL give it a try" minimises the stress to a great deal. If possible, talk to the people who cause the excessive stress in your life, so that they realise how harmful it is for all. Maybe they will take some action to rectify it. It's just that at times people do not realise that they are causing so much stress to others. Whatever you do, try to find an outlet for your stress, before it does some damage to you.

How many of you have pets?

OK, I would like to know how many of you guys have pets? Is it difficult for you to handle them? Or have you grown used to taking care of them. Alot of people say that they actually like to have pets. The pets gives them a sense of security and well being. The pet owner know that there is someone at home who truly accepts and loves them as they are. The pet will give you undivided attention. They will cheer you up when you are feeling sad. Give you company when you are feeling lonesome. Take you out for exercise when they see you are out of shape. So them right and they'll return it right back to you, with interest.

Good Old Days

Call me old fashioned. Call me what you will. I still prefer to use the paper and pen method over the computer method wherever possible. I still like the feel of a pen/pencil in my hand and a paper underneath my hand. This is even though the computer method is more efficient in the sense that there is no wastage of paper and you can easily correct your errors. The computer does have its uses....like when you want instant communication. In this case you can write the letter, email it even to a remote location of Earth and get a reply back promptly. In the so called good old days, I remember when we had no computers. We needed good memories, good recall. Most writing was done by hand, or a typewriter. When we made errors, they usually had to be corrected manually. Good neat handwriting was necessary, and stressed upon. These days computers have made life easier and more hassle-free. But we cannot always work in the online mode, especially if I want to note something down quick so that I do not forget it. Plus, especially when I am away from desk, I have to fall back upon the paper and pen mode. In this case, it is just more convenient and faster than pulling out the laptop, powering it up and typing out a letter.

Oh really? I think I'll have my say on that also....

Opinionated. That's what some of us are at times. We can have opinions on just about any topic under the sun. But being opinionated is a different matters. It can be described as someone who is holding to one's own opinion, obstinate, stubborn and at times unreasonable. This can be either good and bad. I guess it all depends on the situation and the opinion that you are holding on to. Opinionated people can be found just about any place. You might be having a conversation/discussion with someone, and a third person might pop in and start giving his/her viewpoint whether it's needed or not, and they might claim that their reasoning is more correct, etc. This can a real irritating situation. At times you have to stick to your guns when you feel that you are not being given your due. So at these times, it is OK to be opinionated. So at times when at times you are outnumbered or outgunned by the opposition, do you give in and save your strength for some other day? Some times a person comes to certain situations when not much can be done, and your opinions/reasoning's no matter how right they might be are just not heard. The other party think that their opinions are more right than yours. What would you do in these situations?

Metallica - The new albulm

A select group of people were given a chance to hear a few tracks from Metallica's new albulm. The lucky folks who were given this opportunity were: Bob Mulhouse of The Quietus, and representatives from Rock Sound, Kerrang! and Metal Hammer. This listening session took place in London on June 4th, where they were given a chance to preview 6 of the 10 tracks from the upcoming METALLICA album.
One of the songs has a working title of 'Flamingo' and is going to be the first single. It is a modernised version of their 1988 song 'One'. The next song is approximatly 6 minutes long and starts off with Robert Trujillo bass intro. Going from riff to riff quickly, this song is full of energy. James Hetfield repeatly shouts 'Luck runs out!' and plays some excellent riffs which sounds like they could have been borrowed from their 1988 album '…And Justice For All'. Kirk Hammett, the lead guitarist explodes into awesome riffs which he is so well known for. The third song sounds very similar to'…And Justice', a long, unhurried session which revolves around the line 'Bow down / Sell your soul to me / I will set you free,'. There is alot of soloing from Kirk Hammett. The forth one can be labelled as 'We Die Hard' since James Hetfield repeatly barks this phrase. This song starts real slow but jumps halfway through into an all stop-start riffs and a clever time signature. The fifth track is a combination of riffs of 'St. Anger' and Load. The final song is the best. In this final song, they have gone into thrash metal mode. It is alot like it's older and slower cousin - Battery, and has the ability to keep the older fans fully satisfied.
Overall, I think it is a good albulm with alot of solos and old style music with some new stuff thrown in. It is a mixed bag. But the older listeners of Metallica will be happy. The album is expected to hit the stands in Sep-Oct 2008 period.

Cats and kittens

Cats and kittens are my favorite pets. They are extremely cuddly, intelligent, independent. They know what they want. You simply cannot order around a cat. It will probably give you menacing look if you do or one which probably means - You want me to do what? It is not us which adopt them. It is in fact the felines which adopt us. I sometimes think if they consider us their pets. They always are so demanding, yet require minimum maintenance. Under normal cicumstances they are self cleaning. Rarely will you see a dirty cat. Given enough time, even the rare dirty cat will probably be clean when it finally gets the chance. Given a chance, I would like to have at least 6 cats as my pets.

History Rocks TV Series To Air In New Delhi

Some of the legendary performers and rock musicians will be featured on the History Channel in New Delhi. History Rocks, will show some of the greatest moments in rock, will be featured at 9 pm every Thursday, starting June 5,2008. It has been regularly telecast since 2004. Some of the artists who are featured in these 17 part series are: METALLICA, U2, PINK FLOYD, JIMI HENDRIX, BOB MARLEY, ELVIS PRESLEY, BEATLES, ROLLING STONES and DEEP PURPLE. In the following cities Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore special rock nights will be organised by the channel to promote the show where leading rock bands such as Parikrama, Vayu and Galeej Gurus will perform for the rock enthusiasts. One lucky winner will get a chance to watch an International live concert in New York. The lucky winner will be chosen through an interactive contest with a radio partner. Some of the musical icons who are featured on these series have decades of sold-out concerts and multi-platinum album success. So it will be fun to watch and learn something new. It will bring back a lot of memories. Some of these groups are all time greats. Some of the older groups paved the way for the newer generation groups. So tune in and learn something new. Or maybe refresh your memory by travelling down memory lane.

Ozzfest 2008 - WITHIN CHAOS, THE DESTRO Added To "Texas Stage"

Ozzfest 2008 will rock the Pizza Hut Park in Dallas, Texas on August 9th.
It promises to be a mega event since two giants of rock will be attending. It's a must watch event for all headbangers. There are so many excellent groups particpating here. Also there are 2 major labels doing their stuff also. But on the other hand the All-Star Tribute To "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott event by itself is worth the ticket price. So go out and have fun. It is an awesome event. Ozzfest is always a must see event as it always manages to introduce new groups to the public and give a good entertaiment value for the money. So, what are you waiting for. Go out and have fun. You will have a blast. It will be a no holds barred show. Alot of talent will be present on stage. It just a matter of discovering which group you are drawn to.
